Founder & CEO

A chemist and PhD in Materials Science specializing in biomaerials, with training in business administration, Merari built her career developing nanotherapies and polymeric hydrogels for tissue regeneration, with an emphasis on their application in cardiovascular diseases. Her path took her from international academic research to technology entrepreneurship. She leads Ombú by combining scientific rigor with business vision to advance health solutions, with a focus on B recover, the first regenerative therapy aimed at all survivors of ischemic stroke.

Prof. Abhay Pandit

Scientific Advisory Board

Professor Abhay Pandit is the Director of CÚRAM, Research Ireland Centre for Medical Devices, and an Established Professor of Biomaterials at the University of Galway. His research focuses on developing advanced biomaterial platforms for targeted delivery of biomolecules to aid molecular and cellular repair. He is particularly interested in optimizing biomaterial substrates for glycomodulating biomolecules to treat rare eye diseases, aiming to restore cell physiology, immune balance, vascularization, neural function, and signaling in corneal pathology.

His work has contributed to the development of biomaterial platforms for neural, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular applications, many of which have been validated for clinical use. He has published over 400 peer-reviewed papers leading to a h-index of 70, filed numerous patents, and licensed four technologies to medical device companies. Prof. Pandit has also secured €90M in research funding, coordinated four EU grants, and received multiple prestigious awards, including fellowships from AIMBE, the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering, and the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society.

Dr. Rodríguez-Cabello is a Full Professor at the University of Valladolid, Spain, specializing in polymer physics and biomaterials science. He founded BIOFORGE in 1997, now a world-leading research group in recombinamers. His research focuses on biofunctional, smart, and customized protein polymers for advanced biomedical applications.

He has authored 200 peer-reviewed papers, 13 book chapters, 9 patents, leading to a h-index of 49. He has supervised 23 PhD students, 20 MSc students, and 7 postdoctoral fellows. Prof. Rodríguez-Cabello has coordinated numerous National and European research projects, securing over €8 million in funding over the last decade. He has been actively involved in scientific societies, journal editorial boards, and international conference committees, delivering 38 invited/keynote/plenary talks at major scientific events, including SIBB, TERMIS, ESB, and the World Polymer Congress.

Dr. Matilde Alonso Rodrigo, PhD in Chemical Sciences from the University of Valladolid, is a Full Professor at the University School of the University of Valladolid. She is a founding member of the Bioforge Group, recognized as a Group of Excellence by the Regional Government of Castilla y León. Her research focuses on recombinant elastin-like polymers, with more than 100 indexed publications leading to an h-index of 38 and six patents (three PCTs).

She has supervised many doctoral theses, receiving prestigious awards. Dr. Alonso Rodrigo has participated in 40+ research projects, including EU-funded programs like BioPolySurf (FP6) and Elastislet (H2020), and has led 12 projects funded by national, regional, and industry collaborations. She is also a co-founder of TECHNICAL PROTEINS NANOBIOTECHNOLOGY S.L., a University of Valladolid spin-off established in 2010.
